Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to get SNAP?

Most applicants receive a decision within 30 days. If your income is very low or you are in a crisis, you may qualify for expedited benefits within 7 days.

Does owning a car or house affect SNAP eligibility?

Most states have broad asset rules. A home and one vehicle are generally excluded. Many states have eliminated asset tests entirely.

Can I get SNAP if I am working?

Yes. Most SNAP recipients are working households. The earned income deduction actually makes it easier to qualify when you have a job.

What if I was denied before?

Rules change and your circumstances change. Re-applying costs nothing and many families are approved on a second application, especially if household size, income, or expenses have changed.
