WIC: Nutrition Support for Moms and Young Children

WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) is one of the most effective nutrition programs in the US. It provides healthy food, nutrition counseling, and healthcare referrals to pregnant women, new mothers, infants, and children under age 5. Nearly half of all babies born in the US participate in WIC.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does WIC work at the grocery store?

WIC benefits are loaded onto a card (similar to an EBT card) that can be used at participating stores. Your local WIC office provides a list of approved foods. Not all items in a product category qualify – check labels for the WIC logo or approved item list.

Is WIC available for fathers or other caregivers?

Yes. Any legal guardian or father caring for an infant or young child can apply on behalf of that child, even if the mother is not participating in WIC.

What if my income just went over the limit?

Report changes to your WIC office but do not assume you no longer qualify. WIC counts gross income and allows certain deductions. Income fluctuations within a certification period may not affect your current benefits.

Can I get WIC at any age during pregnancy?

Yes. You can enroll in WIC at any point during your pregnancy. The sooner you enroll, the more benefits you receive. Prenatal nutrition is most critical in the first trimester.
